When the valve clearance on any vintage Japanese motorcycle gets sufficiently out of adjustment, the signs may be obvious and they may not. When loose, valves will clatter along with the RPMs of a running engine. That’s easy enough to discern. But when your KZ1000 becomes hard to start, and her performance begins to lag, tight valves should be a consideration. You could live with either one for a while, but the damage is only going to get worse. Valve adjustments are like root canals: They aren’t fun, but they must be done.
Whether you’re correcting the lash on a Yamaha shim-under-bucket setup or a big Kawasaki shim-over-bucket design, Z1 has the shims you need to set your valve lash perfectly. We stock 13mm valve shim kits, 29mm valve shim kits, 29.5mm valve shim kits, and 25mm valve shim kits, and many individually sized shims to suit a variety of vintage Japanese motorcycle restorations or repairs. We also carry the Motion Pro shim changing tool, which is needed to replace the shims on large-displacement Kawasaki engines and costs a fraction of the OEM tool.
